Who We Are & What We Do
Kahler Mediation Solutions invites people to come together to work out their differences within a space of integrity, dignity, and respect.
What is mediation? Mediation is an informal settlement conference during which a trained Mediator assists the people involved to negotiate a solution to the matters causing the conflict between them. Mediation is private, confidential, and voluntary. The Mediator remains neutral and does not take sides.
Mediation provides an opportunity for people to meet (virtually or in person) and discuss matters that are important to each person as well as how they are affected by their shared situation. There is no final agreement required unless all the people involved in the mediation agree to the terms, and if an agreement is reached, it will be written up afterward and signed by those involved. The signed agreement may then be filed with the Court and approved by a Judge.

About Steve Kahler
Steve is the Chief Mediation Officer of Kahler Mediation Solutions and a trained attorney licensed to practice in Iowa. He has successfully completed the 40-hour mediation training required of Family Law Mediators in Iowa, and has participated in multiple types of mediation and arbitration.
Steve graduated from Drake University Law School earning his Doctor of Jurisprudence with Honors in 1986. Following graduation, Steve was an attorney with a boutique commercial law firm in Omaha, Nebraska and Dallas, Texas from 1986 to 1993. Steve was a partner and chairperson of the litigation department while in Dallas. Steve joined the Maquoketa, Iowa law firm now known as Schoenthaler, Kahler, Reicks & Petersen in 1993, becoming a partner in 1995 and taking “Of Counsel” status in 2023.
For 37 years the primary emphasis of Steve’s law practice has been civil litigation and family law. Steve has an extremely broad background of experience that has allowed him to be well equipped for multiple areas of litigation and mediation.
Steve’s practical philosophy is that people are more satisfied with a mutually negotiated settlement where they feel they had a voice and were heard, and Kahler Mediation Solutions wants to honor those voices with integrity, dignity, and respect.
